Seismic CPT Soundings at ESEE sites and ANSS stations. Oct-Nov 2022 and June 2023

PI: Dr. Paul W. Mayne
GRAs: Alec McGillivray, Tianfei Liao and Guillermo Zavala

Acknowledgments:   This testing funded by the the Mid-America Earthquake Center. We want to thank Charles Langston, Mitch Withers and Chris McGoldrick for the coordination and organization to allow us access to the test sites .

On October and November of 2002, CPT soundings were conducted in the sites for ESEE (Embayment Seismic Excitation Experiment) and an ANSS station. On June 2003, new tests were conducted in the ESEE sites and in three more ANSS stations

ESEE is a joint U.S. Geological Survey – CERI project designed to study the excitation and propagation of Rayleigh Waves in the unconsolidated sediments of the Mississippi Embayment. Two borehole explosion sources were detonated to generate surface waves in the southern New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) near Marked Tree, AR, and in the northern NMSZ near Tiptonville, TN. The southern explosion was 2600 lbs and the northern 5000 lbs of explosives. (text taken from ESEE site, by Charles Langston)

The trip was also used to perform a CPT sounding at ANSS seismic stations. One ANSS station was tested in the Oct-Nov trip (MORT ANSS station), and two ANSS stations were tested in the June 2003 trip (GILT and COLT)

The following pictures show testing at the Mooring, TN ESEE site.
